AA Travel New Zealand |
AA Travel PDA website New Zealand Flora & Fauna NZs major attraction is its large amount of wilderness area & many unique & rare species of plants, birds & insects. The only native land mammals are 2 species of bat, & many unique flightless birds (eg the kiwi) fill the ecological niches elsewhere occupied by mammals. Small reptiles, including the tuatara, are close living relatives of the dinosaur. No snakes live in NZ & there are no harmful reptiles. Giant snails & unique frogs survive in isolated environments. Many fish species are unique to NZ waters. Agricultural crops & livestock are vital to the economy. Areas protected by the Department of Conservation in national & forest parks are marked on touring maps published by the AA. |
